The Department of School Education, Government of Punjab is running as many as 12880 primary schools, 2670 middle, 1740 high and 1972 senior secondary schools. Around 25 lacs students are studying in these schools who largely belong to poor cross section of the society.
In order to strengthen school education and improve learning levels of students in government schools, the Department of School Education Punjab has been incessantly making untiring efforts to improve the infrastructure of government schools and also implementing many programmes such as starting Pre-Primary classes in all government schools, creating the option English as a medium of instruction, smart classrooms, smart schools, use of e-content. Learning Enhancement Programme namely Parho Punjab-Parhao Punjab has been launched to enhance the learning levels of children which enable them to learn through activity based method in an enjoyable way. This program has shown good results as reflected in this year's board results of class 10th and 12th recording enhancement of around 30 percentage points and 20 percentage points respectively vis-a-vis results of the last year. For better governance and effective management of human resource, the State has introduced policies for transfer and rationalization of teachers, creation of separate cadre for border area, etc.
More than 2600 government schools have already been converted into smart schools with the help of school staff, CSR/NGO/NRIs and community, etc. As there are large number of government schools, it will take long time if government convert all these schools into smart schools singlehandedly. It is, therefore, intended that Corporate Houses, Industrial Houses, NGOs, NRIs, Alumni, retired officers/teachers come forward to provide support to government schools for this noble cause so that all children in Punjab have access to good quality schools as early as possible.
Though the Department has a policy to solicit support from CSR/NGO/NRIs and community/benevolent persons and already getting assistance from various supporters but in order to reach out to more and more donors; to facilitate the activity of contribution and to make this process easy and transparent, the Department has launched an online portal 'YOGDAAN' having following features:
